Glass

1. Someone left a glass swan beside the pond.
Maybe they thought that
if they left it there,
it would be free.

2. It was covered in mud, and I washed it off
in the pond water before I shoved it in
my pocket. Someone must have
kicked it in
a careless act.

3. I set it on my shelf, beside my window.
I thought it would like to see
how beautiful life could be.
It sat there all alone.
I think it missed
a companion.

4. The sun glinted on cracks strewn across its
tiny body. The sunlight shone on to
display the swan's faults, all too
countless. I couldn't stand to
look at it. I decided it needed
to be shrouded by darkness.
So then, I wouldn't
have to gaze
upon its
scars.

5. It's icy tinted eyes seemed
to stare out into space;
seeing everything,
but taking in
nothing.

6. So, I sat with it each day and
watched the outside world.
It still seemed
so lonely,
though.

7. I think the reason why I tried to help the swan
feel less lonely, was that
we were alike.
And I could
see right
through
it.

8. Someone stopped by our window,
on one of those days
that I helped my swan
feel less
alone.


9. And I fear that the person,
who I was watching from my window,
saw right
through
me.
